1. Your textbook author says the death penalty is in line with the preferences of the majority of Texans. What are the various costs associated with the death penalty? Do you think these costs paid by Texans outweigh the perceived benefits of the death penalty in Texas?

2.  How a Bill Becomes a Law Discussion

Some people have compared watching laws being made to watching sausage being made…once you witness it, you’ll never think of it the same again. (Apologies to all you vegans out there!)  Looking at the flow chart from your textbook on pages 140-141, notice how many places a bill may day (looks like a bomb with a fuse). Obviously, it’s a long and difficult process. Discuss why the process is designed as it is. Is this a benefit or a detriment to representative democracy and the ideals of liberty? Remember: liberty is the freedom from too much governmental interference in our lives. But people always ask their government to “bring about change.”  (NOTE: Spend some time writing the steps to How a Bill Becomes a Law in the Texas Legislature. You NEED to know that.)
