Document: “Southern Planter William Byrd Describes His Views Toward Learning and His Slaves, 1709-1710” William Byrd was among the wealthiest tobacco planters in the colony of Virginia. He owned thousands of acres of land and hundreds of slaves who labored on his plantations. Based on your reading of this section from Byrd’s diary: 1. What impression do you have of William Byrd? 2. How did he spend his time? 3. What does he reveal about his attitudes toward women? 4. How do you think he treated his slaves? 5. Byrd like his fellow planters sat in the House of Burgesses, the governing body of the colony of Virginia. What do you think were their key principles in establishing and maintaining the laws governing this society? (NOTE, when Byrd refers to ‘his dances’ he is describing a form of exercise.)
