1 What is employer branding? Why is it important? And, what are its benefits?

2. What sorts of factors must one consider when managing human resources globally? Please identify at least five (5) factors and describe how you would deal with them.

3. Reflecting on your experience with the Subarctic Survival simulation conducted in class, describe your team’s behavior. What occurred to enable you to survive? Was one person the leader or did people take turns coming up with ideas? How would you describe the situation in terms of “thinking and behavioral” styles (ref. the OCI model). What do you think went particularly well? Were there problems in reaching consensus? (Please describe them.) Over all, what did you learn from the simulation, and how might you apply your findings to work?

4. Define what is meant by “human resource management” and identify at least six (6) human resource management functions.

5. Based on what you learned in this course and what you discovered in researching your “best of class” company, how important is the role of the HR manager, in your opinion, and how does it affect the profitability and performance of an organization? (Please be specific in your answer and provide examples.)

6. In recalling Bowen’s concept of the 5 R’s for recognizing and rewarding employees, identify what each of the R’s stands for. Which is the most important, i.e., statistically significant? And, explain the difference between implicit and explicit rewards. (Please illustrate with examples.)

7. What is “job analysis,” and what are the reasons for conducting job analyses? What are the various ways to conduct a job analysis (name at least three)? What are the possible uses of the results?

8. Please describe what is meant by the team Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR)? How and when might this concept be used?

9. Discuss why employees join unions and what management might do to dissuade employees from joining a union.

10. Please identify the Stages of Growth described by George Land in the Joel Barker DVD on Diversity, Innovation, and Wealth. Please give examples of each. What are the implications for organizations?
