Your Final for this class is to write a research paper (between 1,800 to 2,200 words) on how humans conceive of, relate to, and construct space (and/or time). This very broad assignment can be interpreted in many ways. A few examples that we have discussed in class include: – Human environmental behaviors, such as how we manipulate landscape features like rivers, streams, mountains, mines, forests, or wind for the extraction – What is the impact of banking and finance on the development of urban neighborhoods or entire nations? – How do the methods of procuring food effect our relationship to space, be it hunting & gathering, agriculture, or genetically modifying foods? – How have developments in transportation changed how we conceive of space. – You may also do a general research paper on developments such as industrialization or globalization, but it is important to discuss the spatial aspects of these events. – You may also further develop your midterm if I offered some potential guidance on directions you can expand your research. In this paper you should discuss the existing literature on the topic, as well as present your own ideas and feelings regarding the subject matter. For references you may draw from any of the readings this semester on Blackboard, but you must also incorporate a few sources from outside the class (at least 4 journal articles or books) Additionally, you should include at least one map. You can create the map yourself or take it from another source (just be sure to cite where you took it from).
