What is the impact of the host country’s culture, economy, politics and legislation on the organization’s HR Strategy
Why study international human resources management (IHRM)? Many Canadian companies are expanding and growing their businesses internationally. “Some of these companies are handling the challenge well. Others are failing miserably as they try to manage across borders. More often than not, the difference boils down to how people are managed, the adaptability of cultures, and the flexibility of organizations.” 1 Purpose of Research Paper The purpose of the research paper is to deepen your understanding of international HRM and how it differs from domestic HRM and to become familiar with the key factors to consider when developing an international HR Strategy. The research paper will focus on one of the countries where Canadian businesses are operating outside of Canada (and the USA). As a class, we will aim to cover the top 10 -12 countries where Canadian businesses are operating. The research paper should include an overview of the country, the business sectors that are operating in the country, and an in-depth analysis of the four key factors that influence the international HR Strategy: the economy, culture (see chart on page 514 of text), politics and legislation. The paper should include a suggested approach to human resources management in the specific country that you are examining and an explanation as to why this is the most appropriate approach. This is where your linkages to the academic literature are of most importance. The suggested approach/HR strategy must include a minimum of three HR policies/practices, one being international recruitment and selection, and two others (e.g. health and safety, compensation and benefits, labour relations, training and development, performance management).
