Your research paper should be between 5-6 pages in length, typed (12-point font in Times New Roman, 1-inch margins all around), and double-spaced. Citations must be in Chicago (Turabian) style. The paper should provide a thesis with supporting facts and analyses. A good thesis is hard to come by, so make sure to start early on your paper. Students are encouraged to meet with or email the professor about a possible thesis topic. The paper must incorporate primary and secondary sources to support the thesis. Students are encouraged to choose a topic of personal interest (but topics must be cleared with the professor). However, if students are looking for possible topics, please see sample topics below. Sample Topics: 1. What problems did the Puritans face in their efforts to develop a polity based on religious uniformity? 2. Discuss the political and social tensions in Revolutionary America. 3. Discuss at least two livelihood options that were available for nineteenth-century women. What were the primary economic forces that affected these women? 4. Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of two organizations OR individuals that worked to end slavery in the United States. Students are also given the option of creating their own paper topics, but they must clear their thesis/topic with the professor.
