Why would, especially in this day and age, a college-educated individual be a more effective police officer than an officer who does not possess a degree?

There is no convincing evidence that college-educated police officers are better crime fighters than officers who are not required to obtain a college degree. Keeping that in mind, why would, especially in this day and age, a college-educated individual be a more effective police officer than an officer who does not possess a degree? In answering this question, please research recent police controversies that have occurred around the country and consider whether or not there might have been a different outcome if a college degree was a requirement to be a police officer.
