Discussion: Objectives and Policies
Annual objectives are short-term milestones that organizations must achieve in order to reach long term objectives. Annual objectives are operational in nature – action plans. These objectives must be measurable and clearly stated.
Policies are the means by which a company achieves annual objectives. Policies are the guidelines, rules, procedures and methods that support objectives. Policies let every employee and manager know what is expected of them. In short, you can’t meet annual objectives unless you have policies to back them up!
In the Unit 2 forum, you defined long term objectives and strategies for obtaining your “dream vocation.” Note: Refer to Figure 7-2 on page 216 of your textbook for an example of annual objectives and to Table 7-3 on page 218 for a hierarchy of policies.
