You are the General Manager for an integrated resort in Las Vegas. Next week you will be attending a succession planning session with your Director of Operations to discuss ,managers that are in a developmental process for potential promotion to the general manager level. Your Director is a strong advocate of coaching. One of your managers has shown great potential. and you have been working with her on both development and performance. While she has made significant progress regarding her personal development. key performance metrics are not exceeding expectations. Both you and the Director are aware of unique operations challenges that are impacting her business results. The Director has commented that r’development must result in high performance, or it is not development." You know that most of the issues with your managel’s performance are related to dynamics that are out of the control of your manager isuch as higher labor costs due to inconsistent customer flow. and higher variable costs because of a high guest demand for extras}. You have to decide whether to recommend her at the succession planning session as lrready now” for promotion or “not ready n OW.

1. What would your recommendations be to the GM? Explain your reasoning.

2. How would you reconcile the success in developmental coaching and the apparent shortcoming of your performance-based coaching?
